Course Information
Description	Advanced examination of knowledge, skills, attitudes, techniques, confidentiality and ethical guidelines applied in the counseling, treatment, prevention, and recovery of substance use disorders.

Learning Outcomes	Course Description: The special skills and techniques required in the profession of addiction counseling. The course will cover the 12 core functions (screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, reports and record keeping, consultation) of addiction counseling, confidentiality, ethics and practice in the presentation of a case to a treatment team.
Core Objectives	Course Objective: The objective of this course is to prepare the student to be knowledgeable of the 12 core functions (screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, reports and record keeping, consultation) of addiction counseling, understand ethical and confidential issues related to the profession, be able to prepare a written case for an individual in treatment for addiction counseling issues and present this case to a team of peers. Students will be able to identify the major counseling theories and be able to integrate the rational for using particular models for particular clients. The course meets related course content required by the Texas Department of State Health Services as a related subject course required meeting state Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) requirements.
Program Student Learning Outcomes	All completers will be able to: - Identify various screening instruments - Identify and use techniques such as attending behaviors, empathy confrontation, self-disclosure, assertion training, relaxation training, cognitive restructuring, social learning, and behavioral contracting. - Identify the 12 core functions of substance abuse counseling - Be knowledgeable of the Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes (KSAs) of Addiction Counseling - Make an oral case presentation using global criteria and the 12 core functions case presentation method. - Use a computer to access the Internet and locate substance abuse regulatory agency web site - Write a case study which includes a treatment plan with goals, objectives, and measurable outcomes - Know and elaborate on the professional code of ethics, how this code relates to substance abuse counselors and their clients - Describe a variety of helping strategies to the client?s stage of dependence, change, or recovery - Understand and apply setting-specific policies and procedures for handling crisis or dangerous situation, including safety measures for clients and staff

Grading Scale	Grading will be Based on Following: Tests: 75% Participation: 25% Attendance: 25%
Determination of Final Grade	The examinations will be a combination of multiple choices, fill in the blanks and essay. Your group presentation will count as your final examination (all group members will receive the same grade).

Attendance Policy	Research has shown a strong positive relationship between attendance, participation and college success. I strongly suggest regular participation in this course, both mental and physical. 1. Students on campus but not in class are considered absent. 2. It is the student?s responsibility to notify the instructor prior to any absence. 3. Excused absences include hospitalization of you or an immediate family member, participation in a college event, or a religious holy day. Prior notification to me for pending absences due to college events or religious holy days is required. Documentation of hospitalization is required. The student is ultimately responsible for his/her own learning and professional growth, what you put into it is what you will get out of it!It is your responsibility to conduct a realistic self-appraisal of what you personally need to master and how you can best attain it. Challenge yourself to grow as an individual and a professional. Please respect the confidentiality of the classroom and discussions that are held.
Academic Honesty	Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
